About the firm
The firm your grandchildren will still call.
Boland Law Group is a father and son practice in Scottsdale, Arizona. We advise families of significant wealth, and the companies they built, on the decisions that will outlast them. Our founder was admitted to practice in 1974. Our focus has not widened since.
Our story, in ten stations
52 years, one arc.
Most firms describe themselves in adjectives. Ours is easier to show as a sequence, because each chapter explains the one after it. Scroll, and the line draws itself.
A Green Beret first.
Robert W. Boland, Jr. joined United States Army Special Forces in 1966 and served during the Vietnam War. The lesson he carried out of it has run the firm ever since: preparation decides the outcome long before the decisive moment arrives.
Inside the Internal Revenue Service.
In 1969, well before private practice, Rob went to work inside the Internal Revenue Service. He learned the federal tax authority from within, which is the only reliable way to anticipate it.
Then, Grant Thornton LLP.
In 1972 he moved to Grant Thornton LLP, the international accounting firm, as an accountant. He learned to read a balance sheet before he learned to defend one, and the order still shows in the way the firm plans.
Admitted, and immediately useful.
Licensed in 1974, Rob spent his early years contesting the IRS on behalf of clients who needed counsel that understood the institution from the inside. He earned his J.D. and his LL.M. at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and returned there in 1992 as an adjunct professor of law in its LL.M. program.
The firm serious people called first.
In 1977 he co-founded Boland & McQuain in Kansas City. Years later it merged to become Boland, McQuain, Block, DeHardt & Rosenbloom, a practice that drew some of the region's most consequential enterprises and personalities. Rob became the attorney they called before anyone else.
From counsel to chairman.
In 1994 a client asked Rob to come inside and lead. He rose from general counsel to President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board of a national bank holding company spanning banking, insurance, and investments from Missouri to California. He ran it, grew it, and learned how capital actually moves.
Out of retirement, on purpose.
In 2000, Rob came out of retirement to found Boland Law Group for a specific kind of client, in a specific place, with a philosophy that has not wavered since: the attorney-client relationship should endure across generations, not transactions.
The second generation clerks.
Grant M. Boland joined the firm to clerk for his father, and trained under Steven A. Bloom, formerly head of Greenberg Traurig's Trust & Estates practice in Phoenix. He went on to earn his LL.M. in Estate Planning and Elder Law at Western New England University School of Law.
Recognized, quietly.

Father and son, side by side.
We counsel families on multi-generational stewardship because we practice it. Rob's foundation, Grant's present-day practice, and the same client families, now into their children and grandchildren.
From the founder
Today, our law firm has the honor and privilege of representing many of Arizona's wealthiest families and their business interests.

What it is like to be our client
Four things you will notice in the first month.
Partner-level, every time.
You work with Rob or Grant. Your plan is not handed down to someone you have not met, and the person who signs it is the person who designed it.
Designed to be defended.
The attorney who drafts your plan is admitted to the United States Tax Court. Every structure is built from the outset to withstand the scrutiny it may one day face.
We come to you.
Our Scottsdale office, your kitchen table in Chandler or Prescott, a secure video call, or the phone. Serious planning should not require a commute.
We remember.
We keep the reasoning behind every structure and the family context that shaped it. Many relationships that began with the wealth creators now continue with their grandchildren.
Our values
Four words we are held to.
These are not aspirations on a wall. They are the standard by which we judge our own work, and the reason our clients are comfortable judging it too.
Client focus
To understand a family's goals fully before we design anything, and to measure our work by its value to them.
Passion
When our clients succeed, we succeed. We champion them toward extraordinary things.
Intellectual rigor
We expand what we can do so that clients have new avenues to greater outcomes. Breadth is part of the discipline.
Excellence
To relentlessly pursue outstanding results in everything we do, down to the last page.
