Who we serve
You will recognize yourself here.
A founder the year before a sale needs different counsel than a trustee the year after a death. So we organized the practice around seven kinds of client, and wrote each page from that client’s side of the table. Read the one that sounds like you.
Practice areas describe the lawyer. These pages describe you.
A list of services tells you what a firm does. It does not tell you whether the firm has sat in your particular chair.
So instead of leading with trusts, tax and corporate law, we lead with the seven situations that bring people through our door: the owner, the executive, the sale, the family office, the company that has no general counsel, the retirement, and the family that intends to outlast everyone at the table. Each page is written for one of them, with the questions in the order they actually come up.
Most of our clients belong to more than one of the seven at once, and move between them over the years. The relationship moves with them.
Start with the one that sounds like you
Each card opens a page written for that client alone: the situation, the questions that come up, and the work that answers them.
Wealth that is meant to outlast the people who made it.
You may be here if the plan has to work for grandchildren who have not been born yet, and for the in-laws you have not met. BLG is itself a father and son practice, two generations of Boland attorneys, and this is the work the firm was built around.
- Dynasty and generation-skipping trusts, drafted to be administered
- Transfer strategies: GRATs, IDGTs, family partnerships, intra-family loans
- Family governance, so the third generation gets a vote and a framework
- Charitable vehicles that carry the family’s name and its values
The company and the owner, advised together.
You may be here if you own a closely held company and every decision about it lands, sooner or later, on your personal balance sheet.
- Entity structure, governance and the shareholder agreement
- Buy-sell agreements that will actually be funded
- An estate plan built around the business, not beside it
Compensation is complicated. Your plan should not be.
You may be here if your wealth arrives as RSUs, options and deferred compensation, on a schedule you did not write.
- Tax planning around vesting, exercise and concentrated stock
- Deferred compensation and the elections that come with it
- The estate plan behind the package, including the equity
Most owners exit once. There are no second drafts.
You may be here if a letter of intent is on the desk, or you can see one from here. The best planning happens before it is signed.
- Pre-sale trust and gifting strategy, while the value is still arguable
- Deal structure with the after-tax number in view
- The plan for the day after closing
A general counsel’s judgment, without the headcount.
You may be here if your company is too big to go without counsel and too small to hire one full time.
- Contracts, governance and compliance, on a standing basis
- Transactions, from the term sheet to the closing binder
- One relationship, not a stack of engagement letters
Counsel that works the way your office works.
You may be here if you run, or sit inside, a single-family office coordinating investments, trustees, and philanthropy across a family.
- Trust design and administration across the whole structure
- Entity and governance work that the investment team can live with
- Charitable vehicles, from a donor-advised fund to a foundation
The plan for the years you worked toward.
You may be here if the accumulating is done, and the questions are now about drawing down, protecting what is there, and passing it on well.
- Retirement accounts and IRAs: the order, the timing, the beneficiaries
- Incapacity, healthcare directives and who holds the pen
- Refreshing a plan that was written for a different life
The seven are not seven different people
They are the same people at different moments. Scroll, and follow one composite client through thirty years with the same firm.
- Age 44Business ownerBuys out a partner. Signs an estate plan built around the company.
- Age 57Business exitA buyer arrives. The trusts are funded before the letter of intent is signed.
- Age 63Planning in retirementDraws down in the right order. Updates the plan written at 44.
- Age 72Multi-generational familyGrandchildren arrive. The plan is rebuilt to outlast everyone at the table.
Same firm at every chapter, with the file, the history and the family already known.A composite, not a client. No description of any actual matter.
One office. Most of Arizona.
The practice runs from a single office in Scottsdale, serving the greater Phoenix valley. For clients in Sedona and the Prescott area we come to you, by in-home appointment, so the plan gets made at your kitchen table rather than across ours.
- Scottsdale office15100 N. 78th Way, Suite 203, Scottsdale, Arizona 85260. Monday through Thursday, 9am to 5pm. Saturdays by appointment.
- Greater PhoenixScottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and the East Valley, at the office.
- Sedona and PrescottIn-home appointments, scheduled in advance, for clients in the Verde Valley and the Prescott area.
We are one seat in the room, not the whole room.
Most of the people we serve already have a financial planner, a CPA, an investment advisor, an insurance agent, and sometimes a family office manager. We work in tandem with them by design, so the estate plan and the financial structure are one plan, not two that have never met.
If you are one of those advisers, the office is the right first call, and the attorney on the matter will speak with you directly.

Call the office to begin. We limit our client volume deliberately, so the first conversation is unhurried. If we are the right counsel for your circumstances, our planning questionnaire follows by private invitation.
